The American Nurses Association (ANA) has identified 8 indications letting healthcare workers know when a safety device is beneficial:

  1. Device is needleless
  2. If device uses needles, it performs reliably with all needle sizes
  3. Safety feature is built into the device (you don't have to install)
  4. Safety feature of device works passively (you don't have to activate)
  5. It is evident that safety feature has been activated
  6. Safety feature can't be deactivated and remains protective through disposal
  7. Device is easy to use and practical
  8. Device is safe and effective in patient care
