How to Dispose of Your Used Needles

Many companies offer mail back or pickup services for your needles or medical wastes to ensure they are disposed of safely. Usually for one cost, all necessary containers are provided by the company and they will pick up the containers, treat and dispose of the medical waste safely; or you can mail the containers if you choose to go with mail back. Most companies will also provide you with documentation of the safe disposal.

Tips from Stericycle, one of the largest medical waste disposal companies:

  1. Only use an approved sharps container for used needles, syringes and lancets
  2. Only keep sharps containers in a child and animal-proof area
  3. Do not store sharps in drink containers, bottles, or cans
  4. Do not dispose of sharps containers or loose sharps in your trash or recycling bin
  5. Do not flush sharps down the toilet as they can end up on our beaches
  6. Do not mix other hazardous wastes such as unused medicine with sharps
  7. Do not empty out your sharps container into the needle drop box
